Russell Jackson - Earthworks
You are cordially invited to attend the opening of this exhibition on Thursday 4th November at 6pm.
nkb Gallery is pleased to present a new solo exhibition of paintings by Russell Jackson. Jackson is well known for his idiosyncratic portrayals of the New Zealand Landscape. Jacksons’ approach is unique; he describes our landscape as a place that is defined by living things. Whether it is the influence of native fauna, birdlife or even human occupation; Jackson uses his brush to explore the ways in which the land is shaped by those who inhabit it. This exhibition features a selection of recent paintings; while the works’ are still characteristically Jackson, they also show a new side of this seasoned artist.
Working in his trademark mixture of enamel and oil paint, Jackson builds his paintings up, layer by layer. These works contain both areas of tightly executed detail and regions of loose, deconstructed paintwork. Jackson can depict his subject matter with an energetic liveliness like no other, however in these new works he also revels in the endless possibilities of the painted mark itself. ‘I move between the figurative and the abstract; and from the pictorial to the picture plane,’ says Jackson of his own work. ‘To me, they are just different modes of expression.’
Jackson has been a professional artist for over thirty years. He has exhibited both throughout New Zealand and internationally. In addition to this, his work features in many of New Zealand’s major collections, including those of The James Wallace Arts Trust, The University of Auckland and Fletcher Challenge.
