Hamish Allan

Hamish worked as a Physiotherapist after completing two degrees at Otago University. Yet, around 15 years ago, he was drawn to exploring his artistic potential and developing his art practice. Initially focusing on sculpture and then concentrating on drawing and painting.

Allan is interested in the portrayal of subject matter, whether human form, landscape or object in a contemporary manner with a clean, precise style. Placing emphasis form and structure Hamish takes time to render a seamless drift of tone with a conscious pushing and pulling of perspective. With a keen awareness of historical influences he interprets the place he inhabits and attempts to reflect the emotion and narrative that underlies and contributes to community and the human condition. Allan's work creates the impression of space and serenity by leaving out unnecessary imagery and adding only what is crucial, creating a stripped back essential image.

Hamish won the Christchurch Yellow Pages At Award in 2007 and 2008. In 2009 Hamish's painting "Circa 1937" was selected to be included in (and the cover art) for "12 New Zealand Artists" 2010 by Craig Potton Publishing. He was also selected as a finalist for the prestigious Adam Portraiture Award in 2012, as well a finalist in the Molly Morpeth Art Awards in 2012 & 2014. Hamish has been selected to feature in "Acrylic Innovation: Styles and Techniques Featuring 64 Visionary Artists." by American artist and writer Nancy Reyner and published by North Light Books.
